Chúng tôi đã có một chuyến lên vùng núi Tây Bắc để tìm hiều về đá gà truyền thống của người Mông. Lặn lội đến tận bản Pha Khuâng, xã Co Mạ (huyện Thuận Châu, tỉnh Sơn La), phóng viên chúng tôi đã có nhiều trải nghiệm cực kì thú vị.

Giống gà này rất khó huấn luyện bởi bản tính nhút nhát, sợ người. Thông thường, người nuôi chỉ tìm lấy trứng gà đem về ấp, không bắt gà đã lớn. Bởi gà mới nở sẽ từ từ quen với người, dạn dĩ hơn. Nhưng để huấn luyện tốt nhất thì phải đợi đến đời F2, thấm chí F3 thì mới hiệu quả.

Khi gà được 6-7 tuần tuổi, những con trống chọi mà có cao to, khỏe mạnh, mắt tinh anh, lanh lợi sẽ được đem đi tiếp tục huấn luyện và lai giống. Lúc gà đã lớn khỏe và có thể thi đấu, cần cho gà cọ xát thường xuyên để tăng tính hiếu chiến. Người dân trong làng thường xuyên tổ chức cho gà thi đấu thử.
